How often should a business post on Instagram?
Less often than the advice suggests, and far more consistently. Why posting volume is the wrong thing to optimise, and what to fix instead.

The advice you'll find says somewhere between once a day and five times a week. It's not wrong exactly, but it's answering a question that doesn't matter much — and it causes a specific, predictable problem.
Why frequency is the wrong thing to optimise
Instagram doesn't reward you for uploading. It rewards content people stop for, watch through, save and send to someone else. Those signals are about quality of attention, not quantity of posts.
Which means a business posting three considered things a week will generally outperform one posting daily filler — because the filler teaches the algorithm that your content doesn't hold people, and that assessment carries over to the posts you actually cared about.
The other cost is human. A cadence you can't sustain doesn't produce a slightly reduced version of the plan. It produces three good weeks, a gap, guilt, and then nothing.
A more useful way to decide
Rather than picking a number, work backwards from what you can genuinely maintain in your worst week, not your best one. Then ask what each post is for.
- What's the lowest number of posts a month I could keep up during a busy period without dreading it?
- Do I have a repeatable format, or am I inventing something from scratch every time?
- Is anything I post giving someone a reason to follow, save or get in touch?
- Am I posting because I have something, or because it's Tuesday?
Formats beat frequency
The single biggest unlock for most small businesses isn't posting more — it's having two or three formats they can run repeatedly. A recurring format removes the blank-page problem, gets faster every time you make one, and becomes recognisable to people scrolling past.
Once a format exists, frequency mostly takes care of itself, because making the next one stops being a decision.
So, a number
If you want one: three posts a week, sustained, with a format you can repeat, beats almost anything else a small business can realistically do. Get that running for a couple of months before worrying about increasing it.
